XIX sajandi teisel poolel hakkas ärksamate koolmeistrite eestvedamisel kehaline kasvatus jõudma pisitasa külakoolidesse. Ajaloost on teada, et Paistu oli esimesi piirkondi, kus inimestele kehalise kasvatuse vajalikkust selgitama hakati. Üks esimesi spordiseltse Eestis tehti Viljandis. Esimese olümpiamedali tõi Eestisse Travastu mees Martin Klein....
