Tutvustus
Kui eduka Wheal Leisure'i kaevanduse aktsiad kipuvad üha enam Warlegganite kätte libisema, otsustab Ross oma osaluse maha müüa ja täielikult Wheal Grace'ile pühenduda. Paraku läheb tollel kaevandusel nii viletsasti, et Rossil ei õnnestu isegi pangalt võetud laenu intresside jaoks piisavat summat kokku koguda. Nagu oleks sellest veel vähe, kaotab Wheal Grace'is aset leidnud varingus mitu inimest elu. Suutmata kaevandust kauem käigus hoida, plaanib Ross selle sulgeda. Õnnetuseks on tema laenu vekslid läinud Warlegganite kätte, kel pole mõtteski tema maksetähtaega pikendada. Siis otsustab Rossi ellu naasta Elizabeth ning ka Rossi ja Demelza abielu ähvardab kokku variseda. Kui fortuuna oma palge uuesti nende poole pöörab, näib olevat juba liiga hilja, et midagi päästa.
