Raamat Winston Leonard Spencer Churchillist (1874-1965), Inglise riigimehest, kes üle poole sajandi mängis olulist rolli kogu maailma rahvusvahelises elus.
Alustanud poliitilist karjääri juba XIX sajandil Inglise koloniaalsõdades, lõpetas ta selle 1955. aastal Suurbritannia konservatiivse peaministrina Lääne-Saksamaa taasrelvastamise eest võideldes.
Loodus oli sellele silmapaistvalt andekale inimesele andnud tugeva tahtejõu, ebatavalise energia ja hiilgava oraatorivõime; 1953. aastal pälvis ta oma publitsistika eest Nobeli kirjanduspreemia. Samal ajal oli Churchill sotsiaalse ja rahvusliku rõhumise vastu võitlevate rahvaste järjekindel ning sõjakas vaenlane, veendunud antikommunist ja külma sõja ideoloog.
