W. Tank sai kunstiharidust aastatel 1924-25 Ants Laikmaa ateljeekoolis ning seejärel 1927-32 “Pallase" kunstikoolis. Muusikaandeline noormees õppis samaaegselt ka viiulit Tartu Muusikakoolis. 1944.a. lahkus ta kodumaalt ja jõudis Rootsi, kus jätkas oma kunstnikuteed. Ta täiendas ennast kunstialal Taanis, Norras, Saksamaal ja Austrias ning osales välis-eesti kunstnike näitustel Rootsis.
